Cultural Analysis of the Film

In the midst of a New York surrounded by luxury, sophistication, subtlety and lots of money, where the royal sovereign hung in a land that had been built by the subordinate and indeed, proletarians, the Van de Lyden's had the honor to invite a woman ahead of their time for a fancy dinner at his mansion in one of the most famous streets of New York! Who was this woman ahead of thier time? Ellen Olenska, who had recently arrived from Europe. A fascinating woman that could show through her eyes how astonishing a seductive woman can be. Moreover, she was not even a bit concerned neither with the codes of manners nor with the uptight customs of the high society in New York. The van der Lyden's dinner takes place among the royalty of New York. The most important people were gathered there in one desire: to welcome Ellen Oleska, and, of course, see in a very brief way, how she was and the way such a seductive woman behaved and dressed. She was dressed differently from the ladies at that time; she was not inferior, but she would wear red, while the ladies opted for dark colors as it was usual at the time.

For the dinner they would use the most valuable Chinese dishes; the decoration was worthy of a great palace in Paris, with paintings of great painters and sculptures by masters that only a few people could afford. Furthermore, the wood furniture imported from France and a Portuguese finishing as never seen before. Chandeliers and candles reminded me of the wealth and beauty of the palace of Versailles; the staircase was impressive and imposing. Everything was of great refinement! The waiters would serve the guests French style and there was classical music playing in the background. There was even one person to receive the gloves of the guests as they arrived; they were all outstandingly dressed for the occasion. We could perceive the conversation in general was very polite, and people would not say things directly. What draws our attention, however, is the way Mrs. Oleska behaves. She would walk through the room in order to talk to a gentleman on the other side, introduce herself and begin the talk - something completely different to the customs of time. She would push aside the standards, the rules and especially the social traditions existing in that society. Unspoken emotions would be expressed through the details, such as the yellow roses or a cigar after jantar. In this context, Van Lyden's dinner shows us how fantastic, enigmatic and surprising a dinner with the royalty of New York in 1870 could be.

Em meio a uma Nova York rodeada de luxo, sofisticação, sutileza e muito dinheiro, onde a realeza pairava soberana em uma terra que fora construída pelos subalternos e de fato, proletariados, a família Van de Lyden´s teve a honra de convidar uma mulher à frente do seu tempo para um jantar de gala em sua mansão em uma das mais famosas ruas de Nova York! Quem era essa mulher a frente de seu tempo? Ellen Olenska, recém-chegada da Europa, uma mulher fascinante que transcendia apenas em um olhar o quão arrematador pode ser uma mulher sedutora. Além disso, não estava tão preocupada com os códigos de boas maneiras e nem com os costumes arraigados da alta sociedade de Nova York. The van der lyden´s dinner acontece em meio a realeza de Nova York. As pessoas mais importantes estavam reunidas ali em um só desejo, dar boas vindas a Ellen Oleska, e ver é claro de uma forma bem sucinta,como estava, como vestia e como comportava essa mulher independente e  tão sedutora. Ela vestia diferentemente das damas naquela ocasião, não inferior, mas usava vermelho enquanto as damas optaram por cores escuras como era de costume na época.

Para o jantar tínhamos as mais valiosas louças chinesas, a decoração era digna de um grande palácio em paris, com pinturas de grandes pintores e esculturas de mestres que poucos podiam ter. Adicionando, os móveis de madeiras importadas da frança e um acabamento português como nunca visto antes. Os candelabros e os castiçais me lembravam a riqueza e beleza do palácio de Versailles, a escadaria, era impressionante e imponente. Tudo tinha muito requinte!    Os garçons serviam os convidados em estilo francês e havia uma música clássica tocando de fundo. Havia inclusive uma pessoa para receber as luvas dos convidados assim que eles chegassem, todos se vestiam como prontos para a ocasião. Podíamos notar conversar muito educadas, e as pessoas não diziam as coisas diretamente. O que chama a nossa atenção é a maneira como a senhora Oleska se comporta, ela sai de um canto da  sala e se direciona a um rapaz do outro lado, ela se apresenta e começa  a conversa, ela está fazendo algo completamente diferente  aos costumes  da época. Deixa de lado os padrões, as regras sociais e ainda mais as tradições existentes naquela sociedade.  Emoções não ditas são expressas através dos detalhes existentes ali, como por exemplo, as rosas amarelas ou um charuto depois do jantar. Nesse contexto os Van de Lyden´s dinner nos trasmite o quão fantástico, enigmático e surpreso podia ser uma jantar com a realeza de Nova York em 1870.
